The IOSH Managing Safely course provides a practical framework for managers and supervisors to integrate health and safety into their daily routines. It focuses on the Plan-Do-Check-Act management cycle and is divided into seven modules:
-
Risk Management: Learning to identify hazards, assess risks using a 5x5 matrix, and apply the hierarchy of controls to mitigate them.
-
Legal & Moral Duty: Understanding the "three pillars" of safety (moral, legal, and financial) and a manager's specific accountability under safety law.
-
Hazard Awareness: Practical identification of common workplace risks, including mechanical, chemical, and organizational hazards.
-
Incident Investigation: Distinguishing between near-misses and accidents, and identifying immediate, underlying, and root causes.
-
Performance Tracking: Using proactive and reactive indicators (audits vs. incident rates) to measure safety effectiveness.
Assessment: Completion requires passing a multiple-choice exam and a practical workplace risk assessment project.
